Your adventure begins early in the vibrant city of Kigali, Rwanda. A professional guide from BLS Safaris Ltd will greet you at your hotel or the airport for your transfer to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. This journey takes approximately 4-5 hours by road, but the scenic drive offers ample opportunity to soak in the stunning landscapes that define the region. As you travel, you’ll wind through the lush, rolling hills of Rwanda, often referred to as the “Land of a Thousand Hills,” passing terraced farmlands, serene lakes, and verdant valleys.
Your journey will take you through the border crossing at Katuna or Cyanika, depending on your route. Here, you’ll have the chance to take photos, stretch your legs, and enjoy some refreshments. Your guide will also provide valuable insights into the geography, history, and wildlife of the region, enriching your experience with fascinating stories about local cultures and the significance of gorilla conservation in East Africa.
Afternoon: Arrival at Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
After crossing into Uganda, you will soon arrive at Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, one of the most biologically diverse regions on the planet. Bwindi is famous for its ancient rainforests, home to approximately half of the world’s remaining mountain gorilla population. The park’s breathtaking landscapes and rich biodiversity set the stage for your gorilla trekking experience.
Upon arrival, you will check into your selected lodge or camp, such as Buhoma Lodge, Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge, or the budget-friendly Rushaga Gorilla Camp. These lodges are nestled near the park’s boundaries, offering easy access to trekking points and an authentic wilderness experience. After settling in, enjoy a hearty lunch as you prepare for the next day’s adventure.
In the late afternoon, take time to explore the surrounding area or relax at the lodge. Some accommodations offer optional activities such as community visits to meet the Batwa pygmies, who have historically lived in harmony with the forest. You may also take part in a nature walk or enjoy panoramic views of the forest. As the day draws to a close, a delicious dinner awaits you back at the lodge, where you can relax and rest in anticipation of the gorilla trekking experience that lies ahead.
Day 2: Gorilla Trekking in Southern Bwindi
Morning: Gorilla Trekking Adventure
Day 2 begins with an early start. After a hearty breakfast, you’ll be driven to the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park headquarters for a mandatory briefing on gorilla trekking. The park rangers will provide essential information on trekking safety, environmental protocols, and guidelines for interacting with the gorillas. These rules help protect both the endangered mountain gorillas and the visitors who come to see them.
Once the briefing is complete, you’ll be grouped with other trekkers (usually 8 per group) and assigned a gorilla family to track. Each group is accompanied by skilled guides and trackers who are familiar with the gorillas’ habits and terrain. The trek itself can range from a relatively easy 2-hour walk to a more challenging 6-hour hike, depending on where the gorilla families are located that day. As you navigate through the thick foliage of Bwindi’s ancient forest, you’ll encounter stunning flora and fauna, from towering trees to colorful bird species. The forest is also home to forest elephants, duikers, and several primate species, adding to the excitement of the trek.
Midday: Gorilla Encounter
Once you locate the gorilla family, prepare for a truly unforgettable experience. You will spend one precious hour observing these majestic creatures in their natural habitat. As you stand quietly amidst the towering trees, you’ll witness gorillas grooming, feeding, playing, and interacting with one another. This close-up encounter offers a rare glimpse into their social structures, behavior, and the deep bonds they share within their family groups. For many, this hour with the gorillas is a life-changing experience, filled with awe and appreciation for the natural world.
You are allowed to take photos, but must maintain a respectful distance of about 7 meters. Flash photography is prohibited, as it can disturb the gorillas. The experience is intimate, and the guides ensure that both the safety of the gorillas and the visitors is prioritized throughout the trek.
Afternoon: Return to the Lodge
After your time with the gorillas, you’ll return to the park headquarters, where you will receive a Gorilla Trekking Certificate to commemorate your adventure. You’ll then be driven back to your lodge for a well-deserved lunch.
Depending on the time and your energy levels, you may choose to relax at the lodge or participate in optional activities such as a cultural village tour or a visit to a local craft market. Bwindi is home to the Batwa community, who were the original inhabitants of the forest, and a visit to their village offers insight into their traditional way of life. Alternatively, enjoy a relaxing afternoon at the lodge, savoring the serenity of the forest and reflecting on your incredible encounter with the gorillas.
Evening: Departure or Extension
In the evening, you will have dinner at your lodge. Depending on your safari package, you may either spend an additional night in Bwindi or begin your return journey to Kigali. If you choose to return to Kigali, your driver will escort you back across the Rwandan border, and you’ll arrive in Kigali by late evening. This marks the end of your exhilarating 2-Day Bwindi Gorilla Trekking Safari from Kigali.
