This 8 Day Bwindi Gorilla Trekking and Rainforest Hiking Safari is designed for travellers who want to explore the forest rather than visit it for a single gorilla trekking morning. Spend 6 nights around Buhoma, the northern sector of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park , and enjoy separate days for forest walking, birding, scenic hiking, mountain gorilla trekking and community experiences.
The forest walks reveal a different side of Bwindi. On the Waterfall Trail, follow a ranger guide through lush rainforest with tree ferns, orchids and other plants growing beneath the canopy. Another day is devoted to forest birdwatching , looking and listening for birds around Buhoma's trails and streams. Birders interested in Albertine Rift species will appreciate having time for a dedicated outing.
Your scenic hike follows either Rushura Hill or the Muzabajiro Loop, depending on fitness, weather and trail conditions. Both add wider forest and mountain views to the safari, contrasting with the enclosed rainforest experienced on the earlier walks. A shorter route can be arranged when a long hill hike is not suitable.
The major wildlife encounter is mountain gorilla trekking in Buhoma . Join Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers and follow a habituated gorilla family through the forest. Once the gorillas are found, spend up to 1 hour watching their behaviour. Your itinerary also includes a community-led cultural visit, with a separate optional Batwa encounter available when arranged in advance.
Unlike a demanding multi-sector forest crossing, this journey allows you to return to your Buhoma accommodation after each activity. It is well suited to nature lovers, photographers, active couples and travellers who prefer exploring 1 destination in greater depth. Arrival in Entebbe and Overnight Stay
Your 8 Day Bwindi safari begins at Entebbe International Airport, where your BLS Safaris driver guide will welcome you and assist with the transfer to your selected hotel. Depending on your accommodation, you will stay in Entebbe or continue towards Kampala.
If you arrive early, there may be time to enjoy your hotel's facilities or the atmosphere along the shores of Lake Victoria. Otherwise, spend the afternoon and evening resting after your international flight.
Your guide will brief you on the safari route, the travel arrangements and what to expect from the upcoming days in Bwindi's rainforest. A relaxed first evening is particularly useful before the long road journey southwest on Day 2.
Entebbe or Kampala to Buhoma, Bwindi Forest
After breakfast, begin the journey to southwestern Uganda and Bwindi Impenetrable National Park . The route takes you through towns, farming communities, green hills and cultivated valleys before reaching the mountain landscapes surrounding the forest.
Stop for lunch along the way. The journey normally takes most of the day, with approximately 9 to 10 hours often required to reach the Buhoma region from Kampala or Entebbe. Traffic, road conditions, stopovers and the final lodge approach can affect the timing.
Continue to Buhoma in the northern sector of Bwindi. On arrival, check into your lodge and settle into the peaceful forest surroundings. There are no major activities scheduled for this evening, allowing time to relax after the road journey.
Your guide will confirm the timing and arrangements for Day 3's rainforest waterfall walk. Keep suitable walking shoes and a rain jacket accessible, as Bwindi trails can become muddy even during drier months.
Guided Bwindi Rainforest and Waterfall Walk
Enjoy breakfast before meeting your Uganda Wildlife Authority guide for a guided nature walk in Bwindi. Today is devoted to the forest itself, giving you time to appreciate its plants, birds, butterflies and layered vegetation.
Subject to trail conditions, follow the established Buhoma Waterfall Trail . The route passes through rainforest vegetation where tree ferns, orchids and other epiphytic plants grow beneath the forest canopy. It continues to a series of waterfalls, offering a rewarding destination for the walk.
Your guide will explain the forest ecology and point out natural features that can easily be missed when walking without someone familiar with the environment. The activity can take several hours, depending on the selected route, walking pace and trail conditions.
Expect uneven paths and potentially muddy sections, so wear appropriate hiking shoes and carry rain protection. After the walk, return to your lodge for lunch or relaxation according to the day's arrangements. Spend the remainder of the afternoon at leisure.
Birdwatching in Bwindi's Rainforest
After breakfast, join a knowledgeable local birding guide for a dedicated day exploring the birdlife of Bwindi. The forest is especially rewarding for visitors interested in Albertine Rift birds, though finding particular species depends on weather, season and the birds' movements.
Explore suitable Buhoma trails, including forest edges and areas near streams. Rather than trying to cover long distances, the walk often involves stopping to listen for calls, watching movement in the canopy and searching the dense understory.
Your guide may help you identify birds by their calls, plumage and behaviour. Depending on conditions, you may search for species such as the Great Blue Turaco, Black Bee-eater and other forest birds. Specialist birders can request a longer, slower outing focused on their interests.
Bring binoculars if available, along with your camera, comfortable walking shoes and waterproof clothing. This day is a rewarding part of the safari for travellers considering a dedicated Uganda birding safari . Return to your lodge afterwards for a relaxed evening.
Scenic Forest Hiking on Rushura Hill or Muzabajiro Loop
After breakfast, prepare for a guided scenic hike around Buhoma. Today gives you a different perspective on Bwindi, moving beyond the enclosed rainforest to higher viewpoints and surrounding ridgelines.
One option is the Rushura Hill Trail, known for its expansive views across Bwindi and the surrounding Albertine Rift landscape. When visibility is good, the viewpoints may reveal Lake Edward, the Rwenzori Mountains and other distant highland features.
Alternatively, your guide may recommend the Muzabajiro Loop, which offers a combination of forest walking and ridge views. The route can be selected according to your interests, fitness and the prevailing trail conditions.
These routes differ in difficulty. If you would prefer something gentler, your guide can help choose a shorter nature walk around Buhoma. This flexibility allows you to enjoy the landscape without committing to a hike beyond your comfort level.
Return to the lodge during the afternoon for lunch or relaxation. Enjoy your evening in the forest, preparing for Day 6's gorilla trekking experience.
Mountain Gorilla Trekking in the Buhoma Sector
Today is the main wildlife encounter of your safari. After an early breakfast, travel to the Buhoma park headquarters for your mountain gorilla trekking briefing. The Uganda Wildlife Authority ranger team will explain the rules, confirm your group allocation and prepare you for the walk into the forest.
Accompanied by your rangers and trackers, enter Bwindi in search of a habituated mountain gorilla family. The walk can take several hours depending on where the gorillas are feeding or resting. Expect uneven ground, vegetation and potentially steep, muddy sections.
Once the gorillas are located, enjoy up to 1 hour observing them. You may see a silverback resting nearby, adults feeding, mothers caring for their young or playful juveniles interacting with each other. Follow your ranger's instructions throughout the encounter.
After the viewing period, walk back towards the trailhead and meet your driver for the transfer to your lodge. The rest of the day is kept free for recovery and relaxation, rather than scheduling another major activity after an unpredictable trek.
Your permit must be confirmed specifically for Buhoma. Gorilla trekking is available to travellers aged 15 years and older. You can also explore our guide on booking gorilla trekking permits before finalising your travel dates.
Buhoma Community Visit and Optional Batwa Cultural Experience
Your final full day around Bwindi focuses on the communities living near the forest. After breakfast, meet your local guide for a community-led visit that introduces you to local livelihoods, traditions and the relationship between conservation, tourism and everyday life.
Depending on the confirmed arrangements, the experience may include a Buhoma community walk, visits to local initiatives, demonstrations of traditional skills or opportunities to learn about craft-making, music and daily activities. Some community visits also introduce local practices such as traditional healing or banana beer brewing.
Return to your lodge for lunch. The afternoon can be spent relaxing or, if arranged in advance, joining an optional Batwa-led cultural encounter. Batwa guides can share aspects of their history, forest knowledge and cultural heritage through an established community initiative.
These Uganda cultural experiences add valuable context to your time in Bwindi. Rather than treating the forest only as a wildlife destination, you gain a better understanding of the people who live around it.
Return to your lodge for dinner and your final night in Buhoma.
Buhoma to Kampala or Entebbe, End of Safari
After breakfast, check out of your Buhoma lodge and begin the return journey towards Kampala or Entebbe. The drive takes you out of the forested Bwindi highlands and through southwestern Uganda's countryside.
Stop for lunch and refreshments along the route before continuing towards central Uganda. The journey takes much of the day, and the final arrival time depends on traffic, road conditions and your destination.
Your guide will drop you at your confirmed hotel, residence or onward transfer point in Kampala or Entebbe. If you have an international departure on Day 8, avoid a tight flight connection. An additional overnight near Entebbe is preferable when flight timing is uncertain.
Your 8 Day Bwindi Gorilla Trekking and Rainforest Hiking Safari ends after exploring the forest's waterfalls, birds, mountain landscapes, gorillas and the communities around Buhoma.
