On the second day of your safari, you will rise early for a hearty breakfast, then head to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park’s headquarters for a briefing on the day's activities. Here, expert park rangers will provide important information about gorilla trekking rules, ensuring the safety of both visitors and the gorillas. Trekking groups are limited to eight people to minimize impact on the gorillas, and you’ll be assigned a group to track one of the several habituated gorilla families in the park. Gorilla trekking in Bwindi is an exhilarating experience that takes you deep into the dense forest, following trails created by the gorillas themselves. The trek can last anywhere from 2 to 6 hours depending on the location of the gorillas, with park guides leading the way and providing fascinating insights about the forest ecosystem. As you approach the gorillas, the excitement builds. Once you locate the gorillas, you’ll be allowed to spend one magical hour observing them in their natural habitat. Watch as they groom, play, and interact with each other in their family groups, led by the dominant silverback. This intimate experience leaves a lasting impression and a deep sense of appreciation for these majestic creatures. After the Trekking Exercise. After completing the trek, you’ll return to the park headquarters, where you’ll be awarded a certificate for successfully completing the gorilla trekking experience. From there, you’ll proceed to Lake Bunyonyi, a scenic 3-hour drive away. Lake Bunyonyi, meaning “Place of Little Birds,” is the second deepest lake in Africa and is known for its tranquil waters and over 29 islands scattered across its surface. Here, you’ll embark on a boat cruise to explore the islands, learn about local legends, and take in the stunning views of the surrounding hills. In the evening, you’ll check in at Bunyonyi Safaris Resort, a mid-range lodge offering lakefront accommodations with panoramic views of the lake and its islands. You can opt for various activities such as canoeing, swimming (in the safe areas of the lake), or taking a guided nature walk along the lakeshore. The lake’s islands are shrouded in legend, and a visit to some of them offers fascinating insights into local culture and history. One of the most famous islands is Akampene (Punishment Island), where, according to tradition, unmarried pregnant girls were abandoned as a form of punishment. In addition to its rich cultural heritage, Lake Bunyonyi is a haven for birdwatchers. The lake is home to over 200 bird species, making it a prime location for birding enthusiasts. From the vibrant weaver birds to the graceful grey-crowned cranes, the variety of birdlife is simply stunning. After your adventure at Lake Bunyonyi, it’s time to embark on the return journey to Kampala or Entebbe. The drive takes approximately 9 hours, with a stop for lunch along the way. As you make your way back, you’ll have time to reflect on the incredible experiences of the past few days—the unforgettable moments with the mountain gorillas, the serene beauty of Lake Bunyonyi, and the scenic landscapes of Uganda.
