Trip Overview
Akagera National Park is one of Africa’s great conservation comeback stories. After near-destruction in the 1990s, it was handed to African Parks management in 2010 — lions were reintroduced in 2015, eastern black rhinos in 2017, and the park now hosts all of the Big Five. Three hours east of Kigali, Akagera offers savannah, swamps and lakes you don’t see elsewhere in mostly-mountainous Rwanda. This three-day trip combines two full game-drive days (morning and afternoon) with a Lake Ihema boat cruise where you’ll see the largest concentration of hippos in Rwanda. Ideal as a stand-alone short safari from Kigali, or paired with one of our gorilla-trekking trips for a complete Rwanda week.
