Volcanoes National Park is where Dian Fossey did her landmark research, and it remains the most accessible mountain-gorilla trek on the continent  a 90-minute drive from Kigali International Airport. Twelve habituated gorilla families live on the bamboo-and-Hagenia slopes of the Virunga volcanoes, the same range that crosses into Uganda’s Mgahinga and the DRC’s Virunga National Park.

Beyond the gorillas, Rwanda packs a continent into a country the size of Belgium. Nyungwe Forest is the oldest montane rainforest in Africa, with chimpanzees, 13 primate species and the famous canopy walkway. Akagera National Park  Rwanda’s only Big Five park  was rebuilt from scratch by African Parks: lions reintroduced in 2015, rhinos in 2017. Lake Kivu offers serene volcanic-shore beaches, and Kigali itself surprises every traveller with its order, walkability and sophistication.
