After an early breakfast, head to your sector’s gorilla trekking headquarters for the morning briefing. The Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers will explain what to expect in the forest before assigning you to a habituated gorilla family. Then it’s time to enter Bwindi’s dense rainforest with your ranger guides. The trek can take around 2 to 7 hours, depending on where the gorillas are and how challenging the terrain is. Some days involve a steady walk through the forest, while others require climbing steep slopes and negotiating muddy trails.

Once you find your gorilla family, you’ll have one hour with the gorillas. Take your time and watch them as they go about their day. You might see the silverback feeding, a mother caring for her infant, or younger gorillas climbing through the vegetation and playing nearby. Follow your ranger’s instructions throughout the encounter, keep the required distance, and avoid using flash photography. After leaving the forest, return to the briefing area and meet your driver-guide. Have lunch, then begin the journey back to Rwanda through the same border crossing or the most suitable route for your location.

Allow roughly 4 to 5 hours for the drive back to Kigali, plus time for border formalities and any stops along the way. Since the trek can finish at different times, we recommend spending another night in Kigali rather than booking an international flight for that same evening. This gives you room to enjoy the gorilla encounter without worrying about rushing back to the airport.
