The Expedition

Bwindi is even more remarkable on foot.

This 10 Day Bwindi Gorilla Trekking, Hiking and Lake Mutanda Safari is designed for travellers who want to experience Uganda's mountain rainforest beyond a single gorilla encounter. Beginning in Entebbe, you travel southwest to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park , where the journey follows forest trails connecting different trekking sectors. Unlike a conventional safari that moves between lodges entirely by vehicle, this expedition includes substantial guided hiking through the rainforest.

The first major adventure is the Buhoma to Nkuringo forest crossing along the Ivi River Trail. Prepare for approximately seven to eight hours of walking through varied forest terrain, with climbs, descents, slippery ground and changing weather. Your main luggage travels separately by road, allowing you to carry only what you need for the hike. The trail gives you time to experience the forest's vegetation, sounds, birdlife and mountain atmosphere.

In Nkuringo, the focus shifts to mountain gorilla trekking . Accompanied by Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers, you follow a habituated gorilla family through the steep forest terrain. Once the gorillas are located, you are allowed one hour to observe them. The trek is physically demanding, so the itinerary allows time to recover before moving towards Rushaga for another guided forest walk.

Your final forest adventure follows the proposed Rushaga to Nyabaremura route, subject to confirmation with the park guiding team. Afterwards, leave the rainforest behind and spend two nights at Lake Mutanda near Kisoro. The surrounding islands, quiet waters and views towards the Virunga volcanoes create a beautiful contrast with the demanding days in Bwindi. Optional canoeing, birdwatching, island visits and gentle lakeside walks allow you to finish at a more relaxed pace.

The journey can be completed with a domestic flight from Kisoro to Entebbe, a direct road transfer or a more gradual road journey with an overnight stop in Mbarara. This flexibility makes the expedition suitable for experienced walkers who want to combine a substantial forest adventure with comfortable accommodation and a peaceful lakeside ending. Travellers considering other routes can also explore our Uganda safari itineraries .

01

Arrival in Entebbe, Welcome to Uganda

Your Bwindi hiking and gorilla trekking expedition begins at Entebbe International Airport, where your BLS Safaris guide will welcome you after immigration and customs. Transfer to your selected hotel in Entebbe for check-in.

Depending on your arrival time, spend the remainder of the day resting after your international journey or enjoying the surroundings of Lake Victoria.

This arrival night provides a useful buffer before travelling to southwestern Uganda. Your guide will introduce the itinerary, explain the forest hiking arrangements and confirm the following morning's departure.

Enjoy dinner if included in your confirmed arrival arrangements, followed by overnight accommodation.

02

Entebbe to Buhoma, Northern Bwindi

After breakfast, leave Entebbe and begin the road journey southwest towards Bwindi Impenetrable National Park . The route takes you through Uganda's countryside, passing towns, agricultural areas and the increasingly green highlands of western Uganda.

Enjoy stops for refreshments and lunch along the route as you travel towards Buhoma, the northern sector of Bwindi. This is a substantial road journey that takes most of the day.

On arrival in Buhoma, transfer to your selected forest lodge and check in. The remainder of the day is set aside for relaxation and preparation for tomorrow's long hike towards Nkuringo.

Use the evening to organise your daypack, rain jacket, sturdy hiking footwear, drinking water and other essentials. Your main luggage will travel separately by road during the forest crossing.

For travellers who prefer to avoid the full road journey, a flight to Kihihi Airstrip followed by a road transfer to Buhoma may be arranged as an alternative, subject to the selected package.

Buhoma to Nkuringo, Ivi River Trail Forest Crossing

After an early breakfast, meet your forest guide for one of the most adventurous days of the journey. Today you walk from Buhoma towards Nkuringo along the Ivi River Trail, crossing a substantial section of Bwindi's dense rainforest.

The guided hike is planned to take approximately seven to eight hours, depending on the exact route, terrain, weather and walking pace. Expect uneven ground, steep sections, forest paths and potentially muddy conditions.

This is much more demanding than a short forest nature walk. Your route takes you through changing vegetation, shaded rainforest and mountain terrain, with opportunities to hear forest birds and observe the smaller details of Bwindi's remarkable ecosystem.

The walk is particularly appealing to travellers who enjoy Uganda's forest birdlife and want to appreciate Bwindi beyond the usual gorilla trekking experience. Wildlife encounters on the trail are possible, but the main attraction is the forest itself.

Your main luggage will be transferred separately by road to your Nkuringo accommodation, allowing you to walk with only the essentials. Your guides will confirm where the hike finishes and how you reach your lodge.

Arrive in the Nkuringo region, check in and enjoy a well-earned rest after the forest crossing. Dinner and overnight at your selected lodge.

Mountain Gorilla Trekking in Nkuringo

Today is dedicated to mountain gorilla trekking in Bwindi's Nkuringo sector. After an early breakfast, travel to the park briefing point, where Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers will explain the trekking rules, safety procedures and arrangements for your allocated gorilla family.

Nkuringo is known for steep forested terrain, making it one of the more physically demanding gorilla trekking areas in Bwindi. Your trek may take you across muddy slopes, thick vegetation and uneven mountain paths.

Accompanied by ranger guides and trackers, follow the forest trails in search of a habituated mountain gorilla family. The time required depends on the gorillas' location and movement on the day.

Once the gorillas are located, enjoy the permitted one hour observing their behaviour. Watch the silverback, mothers and young gorillas feeding, resting, grooming and interacting within the family.

After the trek, return to your lodge and spend the remainder of the day relaxing. The schedule deliberately allows time to recover from both the previous day's forest crossing and today's gorilla encounter.

Your permit must be confirmed for the Nkuringo sector. Gorilla trekking requires appropriate fitness and is restricted to visitors aged 15 years and older.
05

Nkuringo to Rushaga, A Relaxed Morning and Scenic Transfer

Enjoy a slower morning after two physically demanding days in Bwindi. There is no need for another early forest departure, allowing you time to rest, enjoy breakfast and appreciate the mountain scenery around Nkuringo.

Depending on your interests and energy levels, relax at the lodge or enjoy the surrounding highland views before checking out.

Later, transfer by road towards Rushaga in southern Bwindi. Although Nkuringo and Rushaga are sectors of the same national park, the road route follows the surrounding mountain terrain.

Arrive at your selected Rushaga lodge and settle in. The remainder of the afternoon is left free for rest before tomorrow's second major forest walk.

Dinner and overnight in Rushaga.

Rushaga to Nyabaremura, Guided Forest Hiking Experience

After breakfast, prepare for the second substantial forest hiking experience of your journey. The proposed Rushaga to Nyabaremura walk takes you into another part of Bwindi's southern forest landscape.

Accompanied by the appointed forest guides, follow the confirmed route through the vegetation and uneven terrain. As you walk, you will have opportunities to appreciate the different forest habitats, mountain scenery and the quiet atmosphere away from the gorilla trekking briefing areas.

The physical demands will depend on the final route, gradients, ground conditions and weather. You should be prepared for several hours on foot and carry suitable rain protection, drinking water and supportive hiking footwear.

This hike complements the Buhoma to Nkuringo crossing by giving you another perspective on Bwindi's rainforest . Rather than concentrating on a single wildlife sighting, you spend time exploring the forest's terrain and natural surroundings.

After completing the guided walk, return to your lodge in Rushaga and spend the evening relaxing before tomorrow's journey to Lake Mutanda.

Rushaga to Lake Mutanda, From Rainforest to Lakeside Relaxation

After breakfast, leave Rushaga and travel by road towards Lake Mutanda in southwestern Uganda. The landscape gradually changes from forested highlands to rolling hills, cultivated slopes and open views towards the Virunga volcanic range.

Lake Mutanda is a beautiful freshwater lake surrounded by green hills and small islands. The scenery makes it a rewarding place to slow down after several active days in Bwindi.

On arrival, check in at your selected lakeside lodge and enjoy lunch or refreshments according to your travel schedule. The afternoon is deliberately left flexible.

You may simply relax beside the lake, take photographs of the surrounding volcanoes or arrange a short excursion if suitable activities are available and you feel energetic enough.

Enjoy dinner and your first overnight stay at Lake Mutanda.

Lake Mutanda, A Full Day of Relaxation and Optional Activities

Wake to the quiet surroundings of Lake Mutanda and enjoy breakfast overlooking the water. Today is entirely flexible, giving you time to recover after the demanding forest hikes and gorilla trekking experience.

Travellers who enjoy gentle outdoor activities may choose a guided canoe excursion to explore sections of the lake and its islands. The calm setting offers views towards the surrounding hills and Virunga volcanoes when the weather is clear.

Other locally available experiences may include birdwatching, guided island visits, lakeside walks, community activities or a visit to suitable caves in the surrounding area. Availability depends on your lodge, guide and local arrangements.

Alternatively, spend the day relaxing at your accommodation. Enjoy the scenery, read, take photographs or sit beside the lake without a fixed schedule.

Activities on this day are optional, and those attracting additional charges can be agreed with the lodge or your safari guide in advance.

Return to your lodge for dinner and your second overnight at Lake Mutanda.

Lake Mutanda to Entebbe, Choose Your Return Journey

After breakfast, leave Lake Mutanda and begin the return journey to Entebbe. This expedition offers three possible arrangements, allowing you to select the option that best suits your preferred pace, travel budget and international departure time.

Option A. Domestic Flight from Kisoro to Entebbe

Travel by road from Lake Mutanda to Kisoro Airstrip for your scheduled flight to Entebbe. On arrival, transfer to your hotel near the airport for the final overnight. This option avoids the long road journey, but flight availability, baggage limits and departure times must be confirmed before booking.

Option B. Direct Road Transfer to Entebbe

Depart early from Lake Mutanda in your private safari vehicle and travel directly to Entebbe. The drive takes most of the day and includes comfort stops and a lunch break. On arrival, check into your hotel near the airport before your departure the following day.

Option C. Road Transfer with Overnight in Mbarara

For a more gradual return, drive from Lake Mutanda to Mbarara and spend the night there. The following morning, depart early for Entebbe. This option is suitable only when your international departure on Day 10 allows sufficient time for the remaining road journey and airport check-in.

Your preferred return option will be reflected in the final quotation, along with the appropriate hotel, flight and transfer arrangements.

Departure from Entebbe, End of Safari

Enjoy your final breakfast in Uganda before preparing for your international departure.

If you stayed in Entebbe after the domestic flight or direct road transfer, your guide will coordinate the short transfer to Entebbe International Airport according to your flight schedule.

Guests who chose the Mbarara overnight will depart early and travel by road towards Entebbe, allowing sufficient time for the airport journey. A late international flight is strongly recommended for this option.

This brings your ten-day Bwindi gorilla trekking, hiking and Lake Mutanda safari to an end, after exploring different sectors of the forest, observing mountain gorillas and enjoying the peaceful scenery of southwestern Uganda.
