This 4 Day Kibale Chimpanzee and Bigodi Wetland Safari takes you into the rainforest and community-managed wetlands of western Uganda. Rather than rushing through Kibale in a single afternoon, you spend three nights near Kibale National Park , giving you time to experience both its chimpanzees and the rich birdlife, monkeys and local conservation work around Bigodi.
The main wildlife encounter is chimpanzee tracking in Kibale Forest . From Kanyanchu, follow an experienced ranger guide beneath the tall rainforest trees, listening for chimpanzee calls and watching for movement in the canopy. The chimpanzees may be feeding high above you or moving through the undergrowth, and finding them can take time. Once located, you have one permitted hour to observe their behaviour.
Your second main experience is a guided walk through Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary. The sanctuary supports several monkey species, including red colobus, black-and-white colobus, red-tailed monkeys, blue monkeys and L'Hoest's monkeys. It is also rewarding for birdwatching, especially for visitors hoping to see the striking Great Blue Turaco. Bigodi is managed through a local community initiative, making the visit about more than wildlife alone.
You have time to relax at your lodge after both activities rather than packing several demanding excursions into the same day. This makes the journey suitable for travellers interested in birdwatching in Uganda , primates, nature and meaningful local experiences. Travellers planning to continue into other national parks can also explore our wider collection of Uganda safaris .

Kampala or Entebbe to Kibale National Park
After breakfast, meet your BLS Safaris driver guide and leave Kampala or Entebbe for Kibale National Park . The journey takes you west through Uganda's countryside, leaving the busy towns behind as farmland, small trading centres and rolling hills come into view.
As you approach the Fort Portal region, the countryside becomes greener, with tea plantations, forest patches and fertile hillsides creating a beautiful approach to Kibale.
Enjoy lunch along the way before continuing towards your selected lodge. The road journey normally takes much of the day, depending on your starting location, traffic and stops.
Arrive in the Kibale area during the afternoon and check into your lodge. The rest of the day is left free for relaxation, giving you time to settle in before tomorrow's chimpanzee trek.
Your guide will confirm the departure time for the Kanyanchu tracking briefing and help you prepare suitable walking shoes, rain protection and other essentials.
Dinner and overnight in the Kibale area.
Chimpanzee Tracking in Kibale Forest
Wake early for breakfast before transferring to the Kanyanchu area for your chimpanzee tracking experience . At the visitor centre, meet your ranger guide and attend a briefing on the forest rules, safety procedures and tracking arrangements.
The standard morning tracking session starts at 8:00 AM, while an afternoon tracking session is also available at 2:00 PM. Your scheduled permit determines which session you attend. This itinerary is planned around a morning trek.
After the briefing, enter Kibale's tropical rainforest with your ranger guide. Walk beneath tall trees and along forest trails, listening for chimpanzee calls and watching for movement overhead.
Kibale is also home to several other primates. Along the trails, you may encounter red-tailed monkeys, black-and-white colobus monkeys and L'Hoest's monkeys among the forest vegetation.
Chimpanzees move widely as they search for food, so the time needed to locate a habituated community can vary. You may hear their calls before seeing them or encounter them moving through the treetops.
Once the chimpanzees are found, enjoy one permitted hour observing their behaviour. Watch them feeding, grooming, calling, climbing and interacting with one another. Follow your ranger's instructions and maintain the required distance throughout the encounter.
After the trek, return to your lodge for lunch and a well-earned rest. The remainder of the afternoon is deliberately kept free, allowing you to relax rather than rushing into another major activity.
Enjoy dinner and your second overnight near Kibale Forest.
Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary Nature, Primates and Birdwatching
After breakfast, travel to nearby Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary for a guided nature walk through the wetland and the surrounding community landscape.
Bigodi feels different from the deeper forest trails of Kibale National Park. Here, the walking route passes through swamp vegetation, forest edges, papyrus and community-managed natural habitats.
The sanctuary is home to several primate species, including red colobus, black-and-white colobus, red-tailed monkeys, blue monkeys, vervet monkeys and L'Hoest's monkeys. Your guide will help you search for wildlife as you walk through the different habitats.
Birdwatching is another major attraction. One of the most sought-after birds is the Great Blue Turaco, whose striking blue-green plumage makes it a memorable sight. Other wetland and forest-edge birds may also be seen along the walking trail.
Your local guide will introduce you to Bigodi's conservation story, explaining how the community manages the sanctuary and how tourism contributes to local development and conservation activities.
This is one of the most rewarding parts of the journey for travellers interested in Uganda's birdlife , forest primates and community-led tourism.
After the walk, return to the lodge for lunch. Spend the remainder of the afternoon relaxing around your accommodation and enjoying the peaceful forest setting.
Dinner and your final overnight in the Kibale area.
Kibale to Kampala or Entebbe, End of Safari
After breakfast, check out of your lodge and begin the return journey towards Kampala or Entebbe.
The route takes you back through western Uganda's countryside, passing rural communities, trading centres, farmland and rolling hills as you travel eastwards.
Enjoy lunch along the way and make suitable comfort stops before continuing towards your final destination.
Depending on your onward travel plans, your guide will drop you in Kampala or at Entebbe International Airport. If you are departing on an international flight the same day, sufficient time must be allowed for road travel and airport check-in.
Your four-day Kibale chimpanzee and Bigodi safari ends after three nights exploring one of Uganda's most rewarding forest and wetland regions.
