Discover Uganda's Capital

Royal hills, market streets and the life between them

A Kampala city tour brings together Buganda history, religious landmarks, local food and the working streets of Uganda's capital. Travel between the hills by vehicle, then explore selected sites and neighbourhoods on foot.

Mengo remains the royal centre, Namirembe and Rubaga carry much of the city's Christian history, and Old Kampala is home to the Uganda National Mosque. Around Nakasero and downtown, markets and trading streets introduce a different side of the city.

Plan around 3 or 4 main stops, with time for a market or local meal. Traffic, worship and site access determine the final order. A flexible route lets you spend time with your guide rather than rushing between gates.

The tour fits before or after a longer Uganda safari . It adds urban and royal history to a journey focused on gorilla trekking , wildlife parks or the wider East African region .

Understand the City Through Its Hills

Give each neighbourhood time to tell its story

A guide connects the royal institutions of Mengo with the missions, trading streets and religious communities that helped shape Kampala. The name itself is associated with Akasozi k'Empala, the hill of impalas, around Old Kampala.

Group nearby attractions together. Explore the palace and Royal Mile on a Mengo route, or combine the mosque with selected central stops. Namugongo and the Bahai Temple need their own travel time.

History, Faith and Daily Life

Best places to visit on a Kampala city tour

Select the landmarks that interest you most. These are options for building your route, rather than a checklist to complete in 1 day.

01

Kasubi Tombs

This UNESCO World Heritage Site is the burial ground of 4 Kabakas of Buganda, covering 26.8 hectares on Kasubi Hill. Muzibu Azaala Mpanga, the main royal tomb building, expresses a building tradition using organic materials.

A local guide explains royal succession, clan responsibilities and the site's continuing spiritual importance. Reconstruction after the 2010 fire also forms part of the visit. Leave time for the courtyard, interpretation and questions.

Follow the custodians' guidance on dress, photography and access to sacred areas.
02

Kabaka's Palace and Royal Mile

Visit the Lubiri grounds in Mengo and learn about Twekobe, the principal palace building. Your guide also explains the underground chambers and the difficult political history associated with the site.

The Royal Mile connects the palace with Bulange, the Buganda Parliament. Include nearby Kabaka's Lake when time allows for another part of Kabaka Mwanga II's history.

Access depends on the areas open to visitors. A grounds visit does not guarantee entry into palace buildings.
03

Uganda National Mosque

Old Kampala's mosque introduces Islamic history and architecture in the capital. When available, the minaret climb opens wide views across the hills, busy roads and surrounding neighbourhoods.

Dress respectfully and follow the guide's instructions. Shoes are removed before entering prayer areas. Ask about suitable clothing and coverings before arrival, and allow worship to continue without interruption.

Tell us if stairs are difficult for you so the visit can be planned without the minaret climb.
04

Bahai Temple

The Bahai House of Worship on Kikaaya Hill offers landscaped gardens, a quiet worship space and an introduction to the Bahai faith. Its open hilltop setting contrasts with central Kampala.

Include it on a northern Kampala route or make it a priority stop. The drive needs room in the schedule, especially when travelling from Mengo or the southern side of the city.

Keep the worship space quiet and confirm photography guidance before entering.
05

Owino and Nakasero markets

St Balikuddembe Market, widely called Owino, is a crowded downtown trading area with clothing, shoes, household goods and food. Stay close to your guide through the narrower lanes.

Nakasero suits a shorter food-focused walk among fruit, vegetables, grains and spices. Explore 1 market properly, with time to talk about ingredients and everyday trade, rather than rushing through both.

Keep valuables secure and ask before photographing traders.
06

Uganda Martyrs Shrine at Namugongo

Namugongo lies northeast of central Kampala. The Catholic shrine commemorates Christian converts killed during the reign of Kabaka Mwanga II in the 1880s. Explore its architecture and pilgrimage grounds with time for interpretation.

Around Uganda Martyrs Day on 3 June, large pilgrim numbers and traffic controls change the visit. On other dates, allow a dedicated drive rather than treating Namugongo as a quick downtown stop.

Specify whether your visit should include the Catholic shrine, Anglican site or both.
07

Namirembe and Rubaga cathedrals

Namirembe Cathedral is an important Anglican centre, while Rubaga Cathedral represents the city's Roman Catholic mission history. Their hilltop settings connect naturally with a Mengo heritage route.

Visit the grounds and learn how the missions developed around Buganda's royal centre. Keep voices low and work around services, weddings, funerals and other church activities.

Interior access depends on the day's worship programme.
08

Uganda National Museum

The museum's collections cover archaeology, traditional music, natural history and Uganda's cultural development. It can provide background for travel around the country when open to visitors.

The museum is temporarily closed for renovation. It is not included as a guaranteed stop. Arrange another heritage visit unless reopening and visitor access have been confirmed.

Closure checked on 25 October 2026. Confirm access again when planning your travel date.
Plan Around the Neighbourhoods

Kampala tour routes and timing

These are planning ranges. Your pickup location, traffic, site access and time spent at each attraction determine the final schedule.

Half-day and full-day Kampala tour options
Tour format Suggested route Time needed Best for
Central half-day Uganda National Mosque, Nakasero Market and 1 nearby heritage stop, depending on traffic. 4 to 5 hours Visitors with limited sightseeing time.
Full-day heritage Kasubi Tombs, Lubiri, Royal Mile and selected nearby stops, with a local lunch. 7 to 9 hours Travellers interested in Buganda royal history.
Religious landmarks Selected cathedral and mosque visits, with either Bahai Temple or Namugongo as the main outlying stop. 6 to 8 hours Visitors exploring faith, architecture and mission history.
City and evening A shorter daytime route, followed by dinner or a confirmed cultural performance. Daytime sightseeing and a separate evening booking. Travellers staying another night in Kampala.

Start with your priority

An 8.30 am hotel pickup works for many routes. Put the attraction that matters most first and keep nearby stops together. Confirm opening and access before fixing the order.

Combine driving and walking

Use a vehicle between hills and longer distances. Walk in short guided sections around markets, Mengo or central streets. Share mobility needs before booking, including difficulty with steps.

Protect onward travel time

Entebbe Airport transfers need separate time from city sightseeing. Share your flight details before confirming a departure-day tour, and keep room for traffic and check-in.

Taste and Experience the City

Food, music and everyday Kampala

Add 1 or 2 experiences around your main landmarks. For journeys beyond the capital, explore our cultural and community visits across East Africa.

Eat a Ugandan rolex

Watch a chapati and omelette being prepared, then rolled together with vegetables. Stop at a clean, busy stand selected by your guide and enjoy it while hot. A rolex fits easily between sightseeing stops.

Sit down to a local meal

Make time for matooke, luwombo or posho with a suitable sauce or stew. Tell your guide about dietary requirements so lunch can be arranged at a restaurant along the route.

Traditional music and dance

An evening at Ndere Cultural Centre can introduce drumming, dance and music from different Ugandan communities. Confirm the programme, performance time and meal arrangements before adding it to your city visit.

An optional boda-boda ride

A motorcycle outing offers a different street-level experience, but road exposure is greater than in a car. Use an organised operator with a suitable passenger helmet. A private vehicle remains available for the tour.

Lake Victoria at Munyonyo

Plan a lakeside meal, garden visit or relaxed afternoon south of the city. Munyonyo fits best when it is a priority or close to your accommodation, with time allowed for the drive.

Kampala after dark

Arrange dinner, live music or an evening venue around 1 neighbourhood. Kololo, Acacia Avenue and Muyenga offer different options. Confirm the return vehicle before leaving your hotel.

Prepare for the City

Practical advice for your Kampala tour

Keep valuables secure

Carry only what you need, keep bags zipped and put phones away beside busy roads. In traffic, keep valuables away from open vehicle windows.

Arrange your transport

Confirm pickup, drop-off and any evening journeys. Allow extra time for traffic instead of placing bookings immediately after a cross-city drive.

Ask before photographing

Request permission for close portraits and follow site photography instructions. Avoid photographing security facilities or checkpoints without permission.

Respect worship and ceremonies

Wear clothing suitable for religious and royal sites. Follow guidance on shoes, head coverings and restricted areas, and keep clear of ongoing ceremonies.

Keep the route flexible

Public events, demonstrations and road restrictions can change access. Follow your guide to an alternative route and avoid gathering crowds or confrontations.

Allow for weather and screening

Bring comfortable walking shoes, drinking water and a light rain layer. Allow time for bag searches and security checks at attractions, hotels and other venues.

Stay Near Your Route

Where to stay for a Kampala city tour

Location affects the day as much as hotel facilities. Match your base to the attractions and evening plans you want to include.

Location Accommodation Suitability
Central Kampala Sheraton Kampala Hotel A central base for Nakasero, the Independence Monument and downtown visits.
Kololo Four Points by Sheraton Kampala A hotel base for Kololo restaurants and arranged transfers to central attractions.
Bukoto Kabira Country Club A resort-style option outside the central streets. Allow traffic time for downtown sightseeing.
Acacia Avenue Bushpig Backpackers Private rooms and dormitory accommodation for travellers wanting a social base near restaurants.
Munyonyo Speke Resort Munyonyo A Lake Victoria setting for relaxation, with a longer transfer to central and northern attractions.

Match the hotel to the day

Central Kampala or the Kololo and Acacia area works for a short sightseeing stay. Munyonyo is better suited to travellers prioritising the lake. Accommodation remains subject to availability.
