A compact park with changing views

Game drives in Lake Mburo National Park move between open grassland, acacia woodland, rocky ridges and wetland edges. The park's compact track network lets you visit several habitats without a long drive between them.

Zebras and impalas are a main part of the visit. Look beyond the nearest herds for elands, topis, giraffes and buffaloes. Along the lake, water and reeds bring a different setting from the open plains.

Lake Mburo fits naturally into a western Uganda safari . Stay overnight rather than treating it as a quick roadside stop, especially if you want both an afternoon and morning drive.

To compare its woodland and shorter tracks with Uganda's larger savannah parks, see our game drives in Uganda page.

Follow the Habitat Changes

Game-drive tracks in Lake Mburo

Combine open ground with a wooded loop or lakeside section. Recent rain and animal movements help your driver decide the route.

Track Landscape What to watch for
Zebra Track Open grassland with longer views across feeding areas. Zebra herds, impalas, topis and elands. Check woodland edges as the morning warms.
Kigambira Loop Woodland and thicker cover with shorter sightlines. Bushbucks, waterbucks, buffaloes and warthogs. Leopards require a patient search and are not guaranteed.
Kazuma Track Slopes, acacia woodland, rocky ground and lower valleys. Giraffes along woodland edges and grazing herds across the slopes.
Lakeside Track Lake views, grassland and wetland vegetation near Rwonyo. Buffaloes, waterbirds and shoreline activity. A boat reaches areas the vehicle cannot.

Plan Your Hours on the Tracks

Morning, evening and night game drives

Morning game drive

Often around 6:30 am, for 3 to 4 hours

Cool air brings zebras, impalas and other grazers into the open. Fresh tracks from the night may still be visible, while early light suits photography.

Start times depend on your lodge, gate access and permitted driving hours.

Afternoon game drive

Often from around 3:30 or 4 pm

Animals may remain in shade at first, then move out as the day cools. Look for giraffes along woodland edges and zebra herds spreading across the grass.

This session can follow a morning walk or boat trip, with time to rest between activities.

Night game drive

Usually about 2 to 3 hours

An approved ranger controls the spotlight while searching for nocturnal animals. Possible sightings include genets, bushbabies, porcupines, hyenas and leopards.

Arrange the activity in advance. A ranger and suitable vehicle are required, and guests must stay overnight inside the park.

Night sightings are unpredictable. Rare animals such as aardvarks should never be the basis of a promised sighting.
Plan How You Will Travel

Guided game drives and self-drive safaris

Guided game drive

A safari driver or park ranger helps connect the tracks and read signs along the route. Footprints, alarm calls and feeding activity can reveal animals hidden close to the road.

Local knowledge matters around woodland bends, muddy sections and the lakeside. A ranger is required for an authorised night drive.

Self-drive safari

Lake Mburo's compact size makes it manageable for self-driving, but you still need a suitable vehicle, enough fuel and a clear route plan.

Start around the main tracks and Rwonyo before adding more enclosed loops. An initial ranger-led session can help you understand the network.

Take Time at a Sighting

Animals and behaviour to watch

Zebras and impalas

Watch mixed herds feeding in open grassland and near acacia cover. Compare how often animals lift their heads and how they respond to an alarm call.

Stay with a herd long enough to see its movement instead of taking a photograph and immediately driving on.

Elands, topis and giraffes

Scan the far side of clearings for elands, which may keep their distance from vehicles. Topis often stand on raised ground, while giraffes browse along woodland edges.

A route through several habitats adds more variety than staying on 1 plain all morning.

Buffaloes and lakeside animals

Buffaloes may graze in the cool hours and gather near shade, mud or water later. Leave a clear path when a herd crosses the road.

Hippos spend much of the day in the water. A separate boat trip offers a better view of the shoreline and lake.

Seasons on the Tracks

Best time for game drives in Lake Mburo

Game drives take place throughout the year. Recent rain affects individual tracks, so keep the route flexible.

Dry season

June to September and December to February

Tracks are often firmer and grass shorter. Animals may spend more time near permanent water and greener valleys. Dust and midday heat increase, so drive early or late.

Wet season

March to May and October to November

Fresh grass and seasonal water spread animals across the park. Taller growth can hide smaller antelopes, and low sections may become muddy. A 4x4 helps with changing conditions.

What to combine with your game drive

Other Lake Mburo safari activities
Activity What it adds Planning point
Guided walking safari More time for tracks, plants, sounds and animal signs close to the path. Arrange an authorised ranger and a route suited to your walking ability.
Lake Mburo boat trip Views of hippos, crocodiles and wetland birds from the water. Confirm departure times. The boat offers better angles for a finfoot search, without guaranteeing sightings.
Horseback safari A different way to move through approved grazing areas and watch antelopes. Arrange through the operator, confirming riding ability, route and availability.
Cycling An active outing through approved parts of the park or surrounding area. Confirm the route, escort, equipment and conditions before setting out.
Birders can include Lake Mburo's woodland and wetland habitats in a wider Uganda birding safari .
Plan the Entrance and Overnight Stay

Getting to Lake Mburo for a game drive

Road access and gates

Lake Mburo lies about 228 km from Kampala. Allow roughly 4 to 5 hours for the road journey, with more time for traffic, stops and the final drive to your lodge.

The main approaches leave the Kampala to Mbarara highway towards Nshara Gate or at Sanga Trading Centre towards Sanga Gate. The Sanga approach is about 13 km from the highway.

Choose the entrance around your lodge and activity plan. Allow additional driving inside the park rather than assuming the gate is next to Rwonyo.
