Murchison Falls National Park in Uganda

Murchison Falls National Park in northwestern Uganda combines savannah game drives, Nile boat safaris and views of the waterfall that gives the park its name. About 305 kilometres north of Kampala, the park lies at the northern end of the Albertine Rift Valley, with open plains, borassus palms, woodland and riverine forest. The Victoria Nile runs through the park before squeezing through a narrow gorge at Murchison Falls. From the top viewpoint, you can watch the river surge between the rocks, with spray rising above the drop. Downstream, the water settles into a broad river flowing towards Lake Albert, where boat safaris pass hippos, Nile crocodiles and waterbirds. Game drives explore the savannah for giraffes, elephants, buffalo and other plains wildlife. Together with a boat cruise and a visit to the falls, they form the core of a Murchison safari. Plan your accommodation around these activities, since the distance between your lodge, the game-drive areas and boat departure point affects how much you can comfortably fit into each day.

Things to See in Murchison Falls National Park

Murchison Falls

At Murchison Falls, the Victoria Nile squeezes through a narrow rocky gorge before plunging into the river below. Spray rises above the rocks, and the roar of the water carries across the viewpoints. From the top, you can watch the river enter the gorge and surge over the drop. The boat approach offers a wider view from downstream, with cliffs framing the waterfall. Visiting both reveals different parts of the falls, from the compressed rush of water above to the river spreading out below.

The Powerful Murchison Falls

Wildlife in Murchison Falls National Park

The northern savannah plains are the main focus for game viewing in Murchison Falls National Park. Giraffes browse among the trees, while elephants, buffalo, Uganda kob, waterbuck and hartebeest feed across the grasslands. Look for smaller animals such as oribi and warthogs between the larger herds. Along the Nile, hippos gather in the water, and crocodiles rest on the banks. Murchison has four of the Big Five, with lions and leopards joining elephants and buffalo. Leopard sightings take patience, and neither big cat is guaranteed on a game drive. Giraffes remain a major attraction, with the open plains allowing clear views as they move between feeding areas. Rhinos are not part of the park’s game-viewing experience. For rhino tracking, include a separate stop at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary on the journey from Kampala.

Primates and Forest Wildlife

Budongo Forest, including Kaniyo Pabidi, adds forest primates to a Murchison Falls safari. Chimpanzees are the main attraction, with guided tracking taking visitors beneath the canopy to search for calls and movement among the trees. Red-tailed monkeys, blue monkeys and black-and-white colobus also inhabit the forest. Across the wider Murchison area, look for olive baboons and patas monkeys. Patas monkeys favour open woodland and savannah, so look for them during game drives rather than on forest trails.

Birdlife and Shoebill Sightings

Birdlife changes as you move between Murchison’s savannah, woodland and river habitats. Along the Victoria Nile, look for African fish eagles, Goliath herons and malachite kingfishers. Boat trips offer views of birds feeding beside the water and perching along the banks. The Lake Albert Delta is a key area to search for shoebills among the wetland vegetation. Allow time to scan with your guide, as sightings are not guaranteed. On game drives, watch the open ground for Abyssinian ground hornbills and black-headed lapwings. Forest visits add a different range of birds, including great blue turacos and white-thighed hornbills.

Things to Do in Murchison Falls National Park

Game drives, Nile boat cruises and visits to the top of the falls form the core of a Murchison safari. Additional experiences include chimpanzee tracking in Budongo Forest, guided walks, birdwatching and sport fishing. Confirm which activities and charges your safari package includes before booking.

Game Drives in Murchison Falls

Game drives concentrate on the northern bank of the Victoria Nile, where tracks cross open savannah and palm-dotted grasslands. The Queen and Albert Nile tracks, west of the Pakwach Road, and the Buligi Peninsula provide routes through the park’s main wildlife areas. Buligi lies between the Victoria Nile’s approach to Lake Albert and the Albert Nile’s outlet. Its grazing areas attract herds, while guides search the surrounding country for lions and other predators. At Delta Point, pause for waterbirds, hippos and views across the river system. South of the Nile, the Heart of Murchison area lies about 20 kilometres east of the Masindi–Paraa road. Its grasslands offer another game-drive option, with Uganda kob and the chance of encountering lions around the grazing areas.

Boat Cruise to the Base of Murchison Falls

The boat cruise leaves Paraa and follows the Victoria Nile upstream towards Fajao Gorge and the base of Murchison Falls. Allow about 3 hours for the trip, combining waterfall views with wildlife watching along the riverbanks. Look for hippos in the shallows, crocodiles basking beside the water, and elephants or buffalo approaching the shoreline. As the boat heads upstream, the river narrows between the cliffs before the falls come into view. Morning and afternoon departures are available through different operators. Confirm your boarding point and departure time when booking, then allow enough time to reach Paraa from your lodge.

Visiting the Top of Murchison Falls

You can reach the top of Murchison Falls by vehicle and explore the viewpoints overlooking the gorge. This fits into an itinerary without taking the uphill hike from the river. For the guided hiking option, confirm that boat disembarkation and the trail are available before booking. Arrange a ranger escort and a vehicle pickup at the top. The walk through Fajao Gorge connects the downstream boat approach with views above the falls.

Lake Albert Delta Boat Cruise

The delta cruise travels downstream from Paraa towards Lake Albert, following the Nile into channels and wetland islands. It is a separate excursion from the upstream cruise to Murchison Falls. The focus is wetland wildlife and the search for shoebills. Allow time to scan the vegetation with your guide, alongside watching hippos, crocodiles and waterbirds. Shoebill sightings are not guaranteed, so make your birding priorities clear when arranging the trip.

Birdwatching in Murchison Falls

Combine boat-based birding with game drives and a guided forest walk to explore different habitats. Along the Nile, concentrate on the riverbanks and wetland vegetation. In Budongo Forest’s Kaniyo Pabidi area, birding involves listening for calls and searching through dense foliage. For a dedicated birding visit, arrange time with a birding guide rather than relying entirely on sightings during general game drives.

Chimpanzee Tracking in Budongo Forest

Chimpanzee tracking takes place in Budongo Forest, including the Kaniyo Pabidi area on the southern side of the wider Murchison Falls Conservation Area. Guided tracking takes you into the forest on foot, following trails beneath the canopy while listening for chimpanzee calls and watching for movement through the trees. The experience is very different from a game drive on Murchison’s open plains. The forest is shaded and enclosed, and locating the chimpanzees can involve walking for some time with your guide before reaching them. Tracking should be arranged in advance, particularly when building it into a wider Murchison Falls safari itinerary.

Guided Walks and Sport Fishing

Guided walks provide a slower way to explore selected parts of the Murchison Falls area on foot. Depending on the location, walks may pass through forest, woodland or riverine habitat, with a guide helping you identify animal tracks, plants, birds and smaller wildlife that are easily missed from a vehicle. Walking arrangements should be confirmed in advance because access and guiding requirements vary by area. Sport fishing takes place on the Victoria Nile below Murchison Falls, where Nile perch are the main target. Fishing requires advance arrangements, including the appropriate permit, a boat and suitable equipment. Trips are normally organised with an experienced fishing guide or operator familiar with the river and permitted fishing areas.

Best Time to Visit Murchison Falls National Park

Murchison Falls National Park can be visited throughout the year, but December to February and June to September generally provide the easiest conditions for game drives. Tracks are usually drier, vegetation is less dense in many areas, and wildlife can be easier to locate around established grazing and water areas. The wetter months bring greener scenery and are still suitable for safari, although rainfall can make some tracks slower or more difficult after heavy showers. Boat cruises continue to be an important part of a Murchison visit throughout the year, so the best month depends on whether you prioritise game viewing, greener landscapes, birding or lower visitor numbers. You do not need completely dry weather to enjoy Murchison Falls. Rain often comes in periods rather than preventing an entire safari day, so itineraries can usually continue with adjustments when necessary.

Period General Conditions Safari Experience What to Consider
December to February Generally drier and hot Good game-drive conditions with more open vegetation Expect strong sun and warm daytime conditions
March to May Wetter period with heavier showers Green landscapes, birding and continued wildlife viewing Some tracks can become muddy after prolonged rain
June to September Predominantly dry One of the easiest periods for game drives and combining several activities Popular travel period, so preferred lodges may have limited availability
October to November Shorter wetter period Green scenery, birdlife and generally good year-round wildlife viewing Rainfall can affect road and track conditions temporarily

Where to Stay in Murchison Falls National Park

Where you stay affects how smoothly your safari flows. For a first safari, the best base is around Paraa and the northern bank, because you stay close to the Buligi Peninsula, the main game drive tracks, the Victoria Nile and the boat cruise departure point. This side works well for elephants, buffaloes, giraffes, Uganda kobs, lions, hyenas, leopards, hippos, crocodiles and Nile waterbirds.

The southern bank is quieter and works well for the Top of the Falls, forest walks, Budongo Forest, Kaniyo Pabidi and the road back to Masindi or Kampala. If chimpanzee tracking and forest birding are important, choose accommodation near Budongo Forest or Kaniyo Pabidi. That way, you combine chimpanzees, forest birds, monkeys and the wider Murchison safari without rushing.

How Many Days Do You Need in Murchison Falls National Park?

For most first-time visitors, 3 days is the most practical length for Murchison Falls National Park, especially when travelling from Kampala. It gives you enough time to include rhino tracking at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary on the journey north, followed by the park’s main game-drive and Nile experiences. 2 days is possible but rushed because road transfers take up a large part of the itinerary. 4 days gives you more flexibility for an additional game drive, the Lake Albert Delta, chimpanzee tracking in Budongo Forest or a slower overall pace.

Safari Length Suggested Itinerary Best Suited To
2 Days / 1 Night Day 1 travel to Murchison and visit the falls or take an afternoon activity. Day 2 early game drive followed by departure. Travellers with very limited time
3 Days / 2 Nights Day 1: Rhino tracking at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary en route to Murchison.

Day 2: Game drive and boat cruise to the falls.

Day 3: Visit the top of the falls and return to Kampala.
Best option for most first-time visitors
4 Days / 3 Nights Day 1: Ziwa rhino tracking and transfer to Murchison.

Day 2: Game drive and falls cruise.

Day 3: Additional game drive, Lake Albert Delta cruise, Budongo Forest or birding.

Day 4: Top of the falls and departure.

How to Get to Murchison Falls National Park

Murchison Falls National Park can be reached by road or domestic flight. From Kampala, the park lies about 305 kilometres north, with the drive to the southern entrance generally taking around 4 to 5 hours before stops. Once inside the park, allow additional driving time to reach your lodge or activity area because Murchison covers a large area.  Your best approach depends on where you are coming from and where you are staying. Travellers from Kampala normally approach from the south, while the northern entrances are useful when arriving from Gulu, Kidepo Valley National Park or northern Uganda.

Travelling to Murchison Falls by Road

From Kampala, the common road journey runs north through Luwero and Masindi before approaching the park through Kichumbanyobo Gate. From Masindi, the direct route to Paraa is about 86 kilometres and passes the Kaniyo Pabidi area of Budongo Forest before continuing deeper into Murchison. This southern approach works particularly well if you want to include rhino tracking at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary on the journey from Kampala. It also provides convenient access for itineraries visiting Budongo Forest and the top of Murchison Falls.

A longer western approach from Masindi runs through Buliisa, with entry possible through Bugungu or Mubako Gate. Mubako is particularly useful for some lodges near the park’s western boundary.  If you are arriving from Gulu, Kidepo Valley National Park or northern Uganda, the northern side can be more practical. Chobe, Wankwar and Tangi gates connect with the Kampala–Pakwach road, avoiding the need to approach the park through Masindi.  Always confirm your lodge location before choosing an entrance. Reaching the park boundary does not mean you have reached your accommodation, and driving across Murchison can add considerable time to the day.

Flights and Airstrip Transfers

Flying is the quickest way to reduce the long road journey to Murchison Falls National Park. Scheduled and charter flights can operate from Entebbe International Airport, with charter services also possible from Kajjansi Airfield near Kampala. Flight times vary according to the operator, route and any intermediate stops.  The correct airstrip depends mainly on where you are staying. Pakuba Airstrip, about 19 kilometres from North Paraa, is the most convenient arrival point for many lodges around Paraa and the main northern game-viewing area. Bugungu Airstrip lies south of Paraa, while Chobe Airstrip serves the eastern side of the park.

Arrange your airstrip pickup before flying. You will still need a road transfer from the landing strip to your lodge, and transfer times vary considerably across such a large park. Confirm the airstrip recommended by your accommodation before booking the flight. Flying can also make sense when Murchison forms part of a longer Uganda safari, particularly when you want to avoid spending consecutive days on long road transfers. The available connections depend on the airline and travel date, so confirm the complete routing before finalising the itinerary.

Combining Murchison Falls with Other Destinations

Murchison Falls fits easily into a longer Uganda safari. From Kampala, Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary can be visited on the journey north, while travellers continuing south from Murchison can connect with Kibale, Queen Elizabeth and Bwindi. Kidepo is another option for longer itineraries continuing through northern Uganda.

Destination Why Combine It with Murchison Falls? How It Fits
Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary Adds guided rhino tracking to the savannah wildlife and Nile experiences at Murchison. Visit en route between Kampala and Murchison.
Kibale National Park Adds chimpanzee tracking and rainforest experiences. Continue south-west from Murchison towards Fort Portal and Kibale.
Queen Elizabeth National Park Adds the Kazinga Channel, additional game viewing and the Ishasha sector. Fits naturally after Kibale on a western Uganda safari.
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park Adds mountain gorilla trekking. Usually combined after Queen Elizabeth when continuing south-west.
Kidepo Valley National Park Adds a very different northern savannah landscape and another major wildlife destination. Best for longer northern Uganda itineraries or carefully planned air and road connections.
