A Forest Walk in Western Uganda

Chimpanzees beneath the Kalinzu canopy

Kalinzu Central Forest Reserve lies in Bushenyi District, close to Queen Elizabeth National Park . Its ridges, valleys and streams provide a forest setting for chimpanzee trekking, birding and guided nature walks.

On a chimpanzee trek, you follow a ranger along damp paths and through the trees, listening for calls and watching for fresh feeding signs. The forest is quieter than the open savannah, but the sounds can change quickly when a chimpanzee community moves nearby.

Kalinzu works well within a western Uganda safari . After the forest, continue to Queen Elizabeth for game drives and a boat trip on the Kazinga Channel . Allow enough time between activities in case the chimpanzee search takes longer.

To compare Kalinzu with other forests, visit our chimpanzee trekking in Uganda page. It covers the different places to track chimpanzees and how they fit into a safari.

Your Walk in the Forest

What chimpanzee trekking in Kalinzu is like

Your trek starts with a briefing before you enter the forest with a ranger and tracker. Morning walks normally start around 8 am and afternoon walks around 2 pm. Your confirmed permit will show the session you need to attend.

The search commonly takes 2 to 4 hours as you follow calls, nests, feeding signs and fresh movement through the forest. Paths cross damp ground, roots and steeper slopes, so you should be comfortable walking on uneven terrain.

Once the chimpanzees are found, you can spend up to one hour watching them. They may feed high in the canopy, groom in small groups, rest on branches or come down to the forest floor.

Chimpanzees can change direction quickly. Your ranger may ask you to move with the group while keeping enough distance for the animals to continue feeding and travelling.

Chimpanzees are wild and move through the forest each day. Sightings and the length of the search cannot be guaranteed.

More Time Beneath the Canopy

Guided forest trails in Kalinzu

Kalinzu has walks for different levels of fitness. Ask about current trail access and conditions before adding a walk to your trip.

Valley Trail 3.5 km, about 2 hours Uneven ground and views across the forested valley.

Look and Listen Along the Trail

Other things to see in Kalinzu Forest

Slow down between chimpanzee calls and look into the canopy, along the path and around the flowering plants at the forest edge.

01

Forest birds

Listen for hornbills and look for great blue turacos moving through the trees. Sunbirds can also appear around flowering plants.

02

Other primates

Look for red-tailed monkeys, blue monkeys, black-and-white colobus and baboons. Calls and moving branches often reveal them first.

03

Butterflies and forest life

Watch for butterflies where sunlight reaches the path. Damp ground, fallen fruit and flowering plants can attract smaller forest animals.

Travellers with more time can include Kalinzu in a wider Uganda birding safari , combining forest birds with the wetlands and open plains nearby.
Forest and Savannah

Combining Kalinzu with Queen Elizabeth

Kalinzu puts you on foot beneath the trees. In Queen Elizabeth National Park , the landscape opens into savannah, wetlands and lakeshores. Game drives and a Kazinga Channel boat trip add a different view of the area.

A morning chimpanzee trek may fit with an afternoon boat cruise or later game drive when timings allow. If you add a longer forest trail, leave the park activities for another day.

Another chimpanzee option in the same wider park area is chimpanzee trekking in Kyambura Gorge , where the walk descends into a forested valley. Our 5 Day Queen Elizabeth and Kyambura Safari includes that trek with game drives and the Kazinga Channel.

Chimpanzee trekking rules

Do not enter the forest if you have flu, a heavy cough or another infectious illness. Chimpanzees can catch diseases from people.

Stay with your group and follow the ranger's instructions. Keep your voice low, avoid sudden movements and allow the animals space when they cross the trail or approach the group.

Do not eat, drink or smoke near the chimpanzees. Switch off camera flash, never feed or touch the animals and carry all litter out of the forest.

Confirm the minimum age, group size and required viewing distance for your visit when the permit is arranged.
