A different rhythm from a savannah safari

Chimpanzee trekking in Uganda takes you into the forest with a guide to search for a habituated wild community. Calls may reveal their position before you see them. Fresh feeding remains, nests and movement in the canopy help guides follow their progress.

Chimpanzees are active animals. You might watch them feeding high in the trees, grooming on the ground or moving quickly through vegetation. The experience follows their movements, so walking time, visibility and photographic opportunities vary.

Kibale National Park is the main choice for a dedicated chimpanzee visit. Budongo suits a northern Uganda route, while Kyambura and Kalinzu fit naturally into a Queen Elizabeth National Park safari . The right forest depends on your route, walking ability and time available.

For a wider regional comparison, read our guide to chimpanzee tracking in East Africa . This page focuses on planning the experience within Uganda.

What Happens on the Day

From the briefing to the forest encounter

Your visit begins with registration and a briefing. The guide explains forest conditions, safe behaviour and how the group should move when chimpanzees are located. Carry your booking details and identification as instructed.

In Kibale, standard tracking starts from the Kanyanchu visitor area. Departures normally set off at 8 am, 11 am and 2 pm, although your confirmed booking determines which session you join.

A Kibale tracking outing commonly takes 2 to 5 hours, including the search and viewing period. Chimpanzees can travel between feeding areas, so the route may leave established trails and continue across roots, muddy ground and thicker vegetation.

Once the chimpanzees are found, standard tracking allows up to 1 hour of viewing. Sometimes they remain together in a feeding tree. At other times, your group moves with them while maintaining the distance directed by the guide.

Choose the Forest for Your Route

Where to see chimpanzees in Uganda

Kibale, Budongo, Kyambura and Kalinzu offer different forest settings. Sanctuary visits and specialist forest excursions should be considered separately from a standard wild chimpanzee trek.

Destination Experience Walking conditions Useful safari combinations
Kibale National Park Established chimpanzee tracking and a separate habituation experience. The strongest starting point for a dedicated primate itinerary. Rolling forest terrain, roots, mud and possible off-trail walking. Standard outings commonly take 2 to 5 hours. Bigodi Wetland, Queen Elizabeth and Bwindi gorilla trekking.
Budongo Forest Chimpanzee tracking around Kaniyo Pabidi in a forest known for tall mahogany trees. Uneven forest paths and potentially extended searching. The walk depends on chimpanzee movements. Murchison Falls game drives, the Nile boat safari and the waterfall viewpoint.
Kyambura Gorge A forest trek within Queen Elizabeth's gorge landscape. Chimpanzees can be difficult to locate. A steep descent and climb back out, with damp ground and possible stream crossings. Kasenyi game drives, Kazinga Channel, Ishasha and Bwindi.
Kalinzu Forest Guided tracking in a forest reserve convenient for the Queen Elizabeth circuit. Undulating trails, damp surfaces and some steeper sections. Queen Elizabeth, Ishasha, Bwindi and Lake Mburo.
Toro Semliki A specialist forest and wildlife setting. Confirm the exact excursion and current chimpanzee viewing arrangements before travelling. Lower elevation conditions can be hot. Walking routes and access depend on the excursion. Semuliki, Sempaya hot springs, Lake Albert and the Rwenzori region.
Ngamba Island A sanctuary visit involving rescued chimpanzees. This is not wild chimpanzee trekking. Usually limited walking at the visitor facilities, with a boat journey from Entebbe. An Entebbe stay or a separate Lake Victoria excursion.
01

Kibale for a primate focus

Allow 2 nights so you can arrive, track the following day and leave without placing a long transfer immediately before your briefing.

Bigodi adds a community-guided wetland walk with a different mix of birds and monkeys.

02

Budongo for northern Uganda

Budongo combines naturally with Murchison Falls National Park . Keep enough time for both the forest outing and the park's game drives and Nile cruise.

A delta boat excursion for shoebill searching is a separate activity from the cruise towards the falls.

03

Forests on the Queen Elizabeth route

Kyambura and Kalinzu work well alongside savannah wildlife and a Kazinga Channel cruise.

Choose Kyambura with the gorge walk and variable sightings in mind. Discuss Kalinzu when comparing available tracking arrangements for the same route.

Book the Correct Experience

Chimpanzee permits and fees

The rates below take effect on 1 January 2027. They are permit rates, rather than complete safari prices. Your quotation should separately explain transport, accommodation and other services.

Experience Foreign non-resident Foreign resident Rest of Africa East African citizen Viewing allowance
Kibale chimpanzee tracking USD 300 USD 200 USD 100 UGX 180,000 Up to 1 hour
Kibale chimpanzee habituation USD 400 USD 300 USD 250 UGX 250,000 Up to 4 hours
Kyambura chimpanzee tracking USD 200 USD 150 USD 100 UGX 50,000 Up to 1 hour
Budongo and Kalinzu have separate booking arrangements. Ask for their current rates in your quotation. Ngamba Island sanctuary visits are also booked separately.

Before paying, confirm the forest, activity, date, session and participant names. A tracking permit and a habituation permit are different bookings. If you are combining chimpanzees with gorilla trekking in Uganda , coordinate both permits before fixing the rest of the itinerary.

Understand the Difference

Standard trekking or chimpanzee habituation

Standard chimpanzee trekking

Standard tracking suits travellers who want a guided forest encounter within a broader wildlife safari. Once the chimpanzees are located, the viewing allowance is up to 1 hour.

The total outing is longer because it includes the briefing, searching and return walk. Leave flexibility before any afternoon activity.

Chimpanzee habituation

Kibale's habituation experience offers up to 4 hours with the chimpanzees after they are located. It suits visitors who want more time to observe behaviour and can manage a longer forest outing.

This is not 4 hours of stationary viewing. Chimpanzees move, visibility changes and the complete outing can take longer. Confirm the early reporting time with your guide.

Plan for a Rainforest

When to go chimpanzee trekking

Trekking takes place throughout the year. Seasonal patterns help with planning, but rain is possible in every month.

Generally drier periods

June to September and December to February

These periods often offer more manageable trail conditions. Forest shade still holds moisture, and rain protection remains useful. Book popular travel dates early when coordinating several safari permits.

Generally wetter periods

March to May and October to November

Expect muddier paths, wet vegetation and a greater chance of rain during the walk. Chimpanzee movements depend on food and other conditions, so wet weather does not guarantee an easier search.

Prepare for the Walk

Fitness, forest rules and what to carry

How demanding is the trek

Difficulty depends on the forest, weather and where the chimpanzees have moved. Even a relatively gentle route can involve slippery roots, mud and a quick walking pace. Kyambura adds a substantial descent and climb out of the gorge.

Tell BLS Safaris about mobility restrictions, walking concerns or health conditions before choosing the destination. Guide support cannot remove the physical demands of a forest trail.

Age and health requirements

Check the minimum age before booking a chimpanzee tracking activity for children or teenagers. In Kibale, visitors must be at least 16 years old to take part in chimpanzee tracking

Do not enter the forest with an infectious illness. Report symptoms before the activity and follow the operator's health instructions. Chimpanzees are vulnerable to diseases carried by people.

01

Follow the guide

Stay with your group, speak quietly and avoid sudden movements. Never surround, chase, touch or feed a chimpanzee.

02

Respect the viewing distance

Maintain at least 10 metres and follow the guide's instructions if a chimpanzee approaches. Do not use flash photography or eat near the animals.

03

Leave the forest clean

Carry out all litter. Ask the guide about toilet arrangements and follow their instructions for handling waste away from the animals.

Build a Sensible Route

Fit chimpanzee trekking into your safari

For Kibale, 2 nights usually provide a useful structure. Arrive on the first day, track on the next morning and continue after your forest activities are complete. Bigodi can work later on the tracking day when the schedule allows.

Continue south to Queen Elizabeth National Park for game drives and a Kazinga Channel cruise, then travel towards Bwindi Impenetrable National Park for gorillas. An Ishasha overnight gives more time for wildlife viewing between the 2 parks.

On a northern itinerary, combine Budongo with Murchison Falls rather than adding a long diversion to Kibale. Travellers with a birding focus can also discuss suitable forest and wetland stops through our Uganda birding safaris .

Avoid placing a fixed trekking briefing between 2 long road transfers. Browse our Uganda safari collection for routes that leave enough time for both the forest and the journey.
