Give Narus and Kidepo their own time

Game drives in Kidepo Valley National Park take you through open savannah, seasonal river channels and mountain-framed valleys in northeastern Uganda.

Narus holds the main game-drive network and the more reliable dry-season water. Start here for buffaloes, elephants, giraffes, antelopes and lions.

Kidepo Valley is drier and more spread out. Its appeal includes the broad landscape, seasonal riverbed and northern plains. Allow a longer outing rather than expecting the same density of animals as Narus.

Kidepo needs more travel time than the western parks. Build it into your Uganda safari as a proper stay, or compare the alternatives on our game drives in Uganda page.

Match the Route to Your Day

Best game-drive areas in Kidepo

Narus Valley

Narus lies south of Apoka and contains the main driving network. Water remains available here longer than in the drier northern valley, drawing animals towards pools and greener ground.

Scan the valley floor for buffaloes and antelopes, check woodland edges for elephants and look across drier ground for giraffes and zebras. Lions may rest on rocky outcrops.

The Kakine, Katurum and Nagusokopire areas provide different views across the valley. Your driver can combine them according to animal movements and track conditions.

Kidepo Valley

The longer northern route travels roughly 30 km from Apoka towards the seasonal Kidepo River. The land becomes drier, wider and more exposed.

Expect longer gaps between sightings. Look for ostriches across the plains and scan distant slopes for antelopes and giraffes.

The route continues towards Kanangorok Hot Springs near the South Sudan border. Arrange a ranger escort and confirm current access before setting out.

Only leave the vehicle at a designated stop or when your ranger confirms it is safe. A dry riverbed is not an unrestricted walking area.
Plan Your Hours on the Tracks

Morning, evening and night game drives

Morning game drive

Early start, usually 3 to 4 hours

Start while the air is cool. Predators may still be moving, while buffaloes and antelopes feed across the valley floor before the heat builds.

Departure around 6 am depends on your lodge location and permitted driving hours.

Afternoon game drive

Often from around 4 pm

As the valley cools, elephants may head towards water and grazing herds move out from resting areas.

Low light brings shape to the mountains and warmer colour to the grass. Leave time to return within the permitted hours.

Night game drive

Usually about 2 to 3 hours

An approved ranger controls the spotlight while searching for nocturnal animals and predators moving after dark.

Confirm availability in advance. A ranger and suitable vehicle are required, and guests must stay overnight inside the park.

Animals and behaviour to watch

Buffalo herds

Buffaloes often spread across the grass in cool hours, then gather nearer water, shade and mud as temperatures rise.

Watch how the herd responds to nearby movement. Several animals staring towards one patch of grass may reveal something you have not yet seen.

Lions on rocky ground

Scan rocky outcrops as well as the grass. Lions may use raised ground to rest and look across the valley.

Keep their route to the plains clear. A quiet wait can reveal more behaviour than repeatedly moving the vehicle for another angle.

Cheetahs and ostriches

Kidepo is an important place to search for Uganda's cheetahs, but sightings are rare. Scan open ground and low rises without building the drive around a promised encounter.

Ostriches add to the northern plains' dry-country character. Binoculars help with distant views.

If birds are a priority, allow a slower pace for calls and distant movement. Kidepo's dry-country habitats can form part of a wider Uganda birding safari .
A Conservation Return

Rhinos in Kidepo

Rhino reintroduction began in Kidepo in March 2026, with the first southern white rhinos moved from Ziwa into a secure sanctuary inside the park.

Do not plan a normal Narus or Kidepo Valley drive around a rhino sighting. Any visitor access needs separate confirmation. For an established rhino-tracking stop on your Uganda route, see Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary .

Kidepo's Northern Climate

Best time for game drives in Kidepo

Kidepo's seasonal pattern differs from the western parks. The main dry period is longer, while rainfall is generally concentrated in one wetter part of the year.

Dry season

Generally November to March

Temporary water dries and animals gather around remaining pools and greener areas in Narus. The northern valley becomes dusty and more exposed.

Heat can be intense. Use early mornings and late afternoons for the main drives and carry plenty of drinking water.

Wet season

Generally April to October

Narus turns green and seasonal water spreads across the valleys. Animals may be less concentrated, while fresh growth and clearer air change the landscape.

Heavy rain can make longer routes difficult. Use a reliable 4x4 and let current road conditions shape the day's plan.

Add Time Beyond the Vehicle

What to combine with your game drive

Other activities for a Kidepo stay
Activity What it adds Planning point
Kanangorok route A longer northern outing with the seasonal riverbed and hot springs area. Confirm ranger escort, access and enough time for the return drive.
Guided walks A slower look at tracks, plants and the landscape around approved walking areas. Arrange an armed ranger and a route matching your walking ability.
Karamojong community visit Time with local hosts to learn about cattle keeping, crafts and daily life. Arrange the visit with the community and ask before taking photographs.
Ik and Morungole visit A mountain walk and a separately arranged community visit. Allow a dedicated day, assess the walking demands and confirm local arrangements.

Getting to Kidepo for a game drive

Getting there by road

Kidepo is roughly 700 km from Kampala, depending on the route. The journey through Gulu and Kitgum is a long travel day. Allow around 10 to 12 hours or more with stops and changing road conditions.

An overnight in Gulu or Kitgum can break the journey. Routes through Karamoja suit a longer trip that also visits places such as Moroto.

Plan fuel, food and drinking water before the final approach. Do not rely on supplies being available inside the park.

Getting there by air

Scheduled or charter flights may use Apoka Airstrip. Flight time from Entebbe is often around 2 hours, depending on routing and intermediate stops.

Confirm the service for your dates and arrange a vehicle for airstrip pickup and game drives.

Allow at least 2 nights, with 3 nights better suited to repeated Narus drives and a longer northern outing.

A longer northern route can connect Kidepo with Murchison Falls National Park . Allow a full transfer day between the parks rather than planning a fixed afternoon activity on arrival.
